Nada Elia Wins Myers Outstanding Book Award

Nada Elia's book, The Revolution Will Not Be Funded, has won a Myers Outstanding Book Award for 2007. The award is given by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights, which announces its annual book awards in honor of International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10.

The Revolution Will Not Be Funded is a project of INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence, which is one of the largest feminist organizations in the world. Nada serves on the National Steering Collective for INCITE! and has thus been involved in organizing the series of international conferences and other scholarly collaborations out of which this book (and its prececessor volume The Color of Violence) have come.

Published by South End Press, The Revolution Will Not Be Funded is an anthology of new essays by radical activists from around the world, offering a critical analysis of the "non-profit industrial complex" on which social change advocates have become increasingly dependent. According to its publisher, The Revolution Will Not Be Funded is "an unbeholden exposé of the . . . quietly devastating role in managing dissent" played by "over 1.5 million organizations of staggering diversity [that] share the tax-exempt 501(c)(3) designation, if little else. . . . [E]ven as funding shrinks and government surveillance rises, many activists often find it difficult to imagine movement-building outside the nonprofit model."
