WRI550: Copy Editing Basics (1.5 CEUs)

Learn to help writers shine. Discover how a professional copy editor approaches the task of editing nonfiction manuscripts. Learn how to correct errors in punctuation, spelling and grammar, as well as ensure consistency with a particular style, all while maintaining an author’s distinctive voice. Compare and contrast copy editing with other editorial
services, including proofreading and substantive editing. Learn and practice electronic and hard-copy standard editorial markup. Develop an understanding of how a copy editor works with various clients, including book publishers, corporate communications departments and non-native speakers.
Instructor: Beth Chapple, M.S. Technical Communication, University of Washington, is a freelance editor for Delmar Learning, Prentice Hall and Stanford University Press, among others.
