What can I expect from the program?
Most participants take between 12-18 months to complete the entire certificate program, taking the required and elective courses at their convenience. After successfully completing the 40 hour Basic Mediation Training, you may apply to officially enter the certificate program. That program includes an extensive practicum that provides you with supervised practice of your newly learned skills in a variety of settings. You must complete a project that allows you to identify the ways you can use these skills to improve and enhance your career.
What do I have to do to earn the certificate?
You must earn a Pass in Basic Professional Mediation, Family Mediation and either Conflict in the Workplace or Large Group Facilitation, and successfully complete a practicum and a projec. The practicum can take as long as a year to complete. You receive a joint certificate from Antioch University Seattle and the Dispute Resolution Center.
What do certificate holders do with their new skills?
Job opportunities for certified mediators are steadily growing as the field becomes more widely recognized. Professionals in many fields use their new abilities within their current workplaces; others opt to go into private practice.
Will I earn university credits for this program?
No--this is a professional development continuing education certificate program. You earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for each course. If you should ever need to document these CEUs, Antioch's Center for Continuing Education can provide you with a transcript. CEUs are not applicable toward degree programs. Many professionals such as attorneys are able use the training toward their professional development requirements. For more information, contact Antiochs Center for Continuing Education at 206-268-4118 or the training department at the Dispute Resolution Center at 425-339-1335.
Are there sources of financial assistance available?
Continuing education participants are not eligible for student loans. However, there is a possibility of working with a lender such as Sallie Mae to to take a continuing education/professional development loan. If you have questions or need assistance preparing to apply for such a loan, please contact Debra Alderman in the Center for Continuing Education: 206-268-4118.
