The Case Management Best Practices Certificate program is a basic interactive instructional course designed for working or prospective case managers. Community leaders provide instruction based on their experience within their areas of expertise.

Participants learn and acquire skills for more effective case management to assist clients toward long-term employment and productive lives. The purpose of the training is to improve essential case management skills, introduce the fundamentals of critical social service systems for clients in a variety of populations and to review methods that support people in attaining better economic opportunities. The training is 60 instructional hours and takes place on Fridays and Saturdays.

This skill-building course enhances and broadens skills in interview and communication, assessment and intervention, charting and documentation. Legal requirements and ethical standards (HIPAA and ADA) are presented and reinforced through group problem solving.

Four separate modules include training in instrumental areas which can present case management challenges, e.g. Substance Abuse, Domestic Violence, Criminal Justice, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health, Youth Services, Culture of Poverty, Homeless, Employment in Current Economic Times.

Participants gain case presentation skills, current resource lists and valuable networking opportunities. In addition, the Case Management program includes coaching on self-care, boundaries and prevention of burnout.

Through a comprehensive group project the major homework assignment integrates all program aspects of instruction, discussion, resource building and networking.

Agencies benefit when their case managers are able to confidently present client files, display new acumen in needs assessment, exhibit newfound motivational communication techniques, exercise innovative abilities navigating case management challenges and share valuable, fresh community resources.

Key elements of the program include:

  • Case Management Basics — includes comprehensive assessments and fundamentals on theory of change, motivational interviewing, building rapport and cultural competence.
  • Documentation and Confidentiality — includes basics of case files, DAP notes, ADA, contracts and liability issues.
  • Client Barriers/Relapse Prevention — includes fundamentals of substance abuse, criminal justice, homelessness, domestic violence, mental health and learning disabilities,
