Learn to Serve: Facilitating the Development of Nonprofit Servant Leaders

Wed., Oct. 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Free to Antioch alumni, ESC consultants and members of Next Chapter Puget Sound; $15 for the general public

How can consultants and board members help experienced and emerging leaders of nonprofit organizations develop the characteristics Larry Spears (Director of the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership) describes as indicative of Servant Leaders? These characteristics are listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of others and building community.

How can these characteristics support and encourage leadership and organizational effectiveness?

This session provides an introduction to Servant Leadership, based on the work of the Greenleaf Center and the classic essay "The Servant as Leader," by Robert K. Greenleaf. Review the basic tenets of servant leadership; the ten characteristics of servant leadership; the servant leader philosophy and credo; and how servant leadership may also apply to those in consultant, coaching and volunteer roles supporting nonprofits.

Presenter: Tracy Flynn, M.Ed. Flynn has over 20 years experience as a trainer, educator and facilitator including adjunct faculty at several universities. Previously she worked as a Health Curriculum Specialist with the Seattle Public Schools, was the Training Director with the National CASA Association, a national non-profit providing grants, technical assistance and training in the foster care system and Director of Training at Planned Parenthood of Western Washington. She has trained and taught in a wide variety of settings. Her expertise includes: cultural competency, anti-harassment, HIV, child abuse and neglect, communication skills, leadership, coaching, strategic planning and facilitation skills.

The Learn to Serve workshop series is a professional development program for nonprofit leaders, pro bono and for-profit consultants, and volunteers working with the nonprofit sector. Co-sponsored by Antioch's Center for Continuing Education, Executive Service Corps of Washington and Next Chapter of Puget Sound.
