Joanne Burtch
M.A. Whole Systems Design, 2009
Antioch allows students to learn about community, design, environment and communication by broadening their experience to go with their personal interests, says Joanne Burtch.
"Antioch offered programs in skills I was interested in developing, and it offered classes on a schedule that suited my needs," she adds.
"I like all of the Antioch instructors. They each have something unique to offer," says Burtch. "I am particularly fond of (Whole Systems Design Core Faculty) Betsy Geist, who blends academic learning with application to personal interests in a way that does not require students to agree with her."
"Before I came to Antioch, I was able to see patterns and have an idea of how to address and change them, but I was not able to articulate these ideas. Now I can."
She says she was able to create an independent study that matched her interests and informed my whole systems design skills.
"The instructor was supportive and helpful with my exploration," she notes, adding, "My best memories are of my cohort and the times we spent gasping for air because we were laughing so hard."
A website manager who enjoys her full-time job, Burtch says she was fortunate her employer has a partial tuition reimbursement program.
"Before I came to Antioch, I was able to see patterns and have an idea of how to address and change them, but I was not able to articulate these ideas. Now I can. It's a satisfying experience to sound like you know what you're talking about," she says.
