Michael McGalliard
Current student, M.A. Strategic Communication,

As an events production manager, Michael McGalliard recognizes the many facets of communication.

"There is so much more to communications than just the printed word," he says. "New media applications are fast becoming the backbone of strategic communication.

"While I truly value the classroom experience, independent studies give me the chance to pursue my own avenues of interest and customize my education at Antioch."

"When I attended the Center for Creative Change Open House, B.J. Bullert (core faculty in Strategic Communication) was there. It was a deciding factor for me in attending Antioch that my program was going to be headed by a documentary filmmaker. It made me feel like my education would be more applicable after I graduated."

McGalliard received his undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Antioch, he says, "seemed to be designed in the same learning style."

He especially values opportunities he has had for independent study at Antioch.

"While I truly value the classroom experience, independent studies give me the chance to pursue my own avenues of interest and customize my education at Antioch," he notes.

He says when Bullert oversees his independent study, she encourages him to follow his interests and dig deeper. "Even when circumstances changed in my study, B.J. supported me to alter the direction and stay focused on my learning goals," he describes.

McGalliard has a question for anyone who might be considering Antioch.

"I ask them what is important, getting a 'cookie cutter degree' or getting a relevant education?"
