Jessica Brockish
Current student, M.A. Strategic Communication
As an Americorps VISTA volunteer with King County Emergency Management, Jessica Brockish helped public educators around the county with disaster education campaigns.
She says Antioch – and the Strategic Communication degree in the Center for Creative Change in particular – offers her the closest match to the work she wants to do.
"While cost was a factor in choosing a school, I found the difference in price among graduate degrees was smaller than among undergraduate degrees," Brockish notes.
"Antioch is a different kind of school and you should be prepared to shift the way you think about your education."
"I wanted to find a program that addressed social and environmental sustainability as well as 'real' world challenges. Strategic Communication offered me the niche of marketing for social change."
She says B.J. Bullert, core faculty in the Strategic Communication program, has helped her see many avenues for social change that were not apparent to her.
"Antioch is a different kind of school and you should be prepared to shift the way you think about your education," Brockish says. "Antioch's unique approach leaves room for really great things to happen in and out of class. Cool field trips, interesting guests in class and seeing change in action are not uncommon occurrences. The Center for Creative Change particularly is a great match for someone who wants to get away from traditional research-based graduate degrees. The focus on environmental and social sustainability is really refreshing."
Her cohort, she suggests, is the source of her best memories about Antioch thus far. "Some days we love each other, some days we hate each other; we learn a lot together and we laugh a lot together. Dinner work groups are probably my very favorite times," she says.
Brockish, who serves as food recovery outreach coordinator for Seattle Public Utilities-Food Lifeline, says classmates frequently serve as her sounding board and offer helpful and insightful suggestions for challenges she faces in her job.
"The tools I have developed to think critically about my work and communication, and how I interact with this complex world, have been invaluable. I have found the core concepts of the Center for Creative Change curriculum are applicable not only in my work, but also in my personal relationships and day-to-day life," she says.
