Theories of Counseling: Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavior
Psychodynamic and cognitive behavior theories are linked to their application in the practice of counseling. The course is comprised of three components: (1) a review of several models of human functioning; (2) applied training in the skills corresponding to the models; and (3) an opportunity for students to engage with and expand upon the models and applications as they continue their exploration of self-as-therapist. Each theory is considered critically with regard to multicultural application.
Theories and Practice of Counseling: Humanistic, Transpersonal and Eastern
Humanistic, transpersonal and Eastern theories are applied to the practice of counseling. The course is comprised of three components: (1) a review of several models of human functioning; (2) applied training in the skills corresponding to the models; and (3) an opportunity for students to engage with and expand upon the models and applications as they continue their exploration of self-as-therapist. Each theory is considered critically with regard to multicultural application.
Psychopathology
This is an orientation in the causes and symptoms of the major DSM-IV-TR categories of psychopathology, as understood from a variety of perspectives. The class includes discussion of schizophrenia, major affective disorders, borderline, narcissistic and other personality disorders, as well as anxiety disorders. The role of the symptom is explored in the inner world of the individual and in broader interpersonal and cultural contexts.
Multicultural Perspectives
The class promotes an understanding and appreciation of cultural and ethnic differences among individuals, groups and families, and explores the impact of such differences on the theory and practice of psychology. This is designed to enhance students ’ abilities to apply multicultural awareness to their professional work.
Group Counseling
The theory and practice of group counseling is the focus. The class emphasizes integrating various theoretical approaches to group counseling, as well as learning basic skills needed to prepare for leading a variety of client groups.
