Where can I find employment as an art therapist? In what settings do art therapists work?
Art therapists are employed in numerous settings — community mental health agencies, psychiatric hospitals, school-based counseling programs, youth and family services organizations, rehabilitation centers, prisons and shelters, to name a few. To broaden employment horizons, Antioch's master's degree offers dual specialization in art therapy with either mental health counseling or couple and family therapy.

What are the required prerequisite classes?
Antioch requires these three classes: Abnormal Psychology, Theories of Personality and Lifespan Development.

Where can I take the required prerequisite classes?
Antioch offers these classes on a regular basis. You also may take courses from any accredited institution. They must be taken for credit and you will need to request that a transcript be sent to Antioch.

Do I need a background in art prior to entering?
Yes. Antioch follows the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) standards, which requires that you complete 27 quarter or 18 semester hours of studio art coursework. While artwork completed independently will strengthen your portfolio requirement, college credit transcripts are required. Continuing education classes, workshops, etc., will not meet this standard.

How many credits do I need in art therapy, in addition to credits for the M.A. in Psychology with Mental Health Counseling (MHC) or the M.A. in Psychology with Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) credits, to complete the degree?
The master's in psychology program in art therapy with MHC is 99 credits and with CFT is 90 credits. The MHC concentration alone is 81 credits and the CFT concentration alone is 72 credits.

How long will it take to get my master's degree?
Taking approximately nine credits per quarter, it usually means 2.5 to three years of full-time study to finish, including the yearlong internship.
