What if I apply to the GTP program and then decide I want to earn a master's degree?
You can work with faculty to modify your GTP coursework plan to add the requirements for a master's degree. The earlier you do this in your course of study the easier it will be to modify your plan of studies.
I already have a master's degree. Do you have a non-master's option?
Yes. For the GTP program, you complete the requirements for certification only.
What can I teach after I complete the program?
Antioch's Graduate Teacher Preparation will prepare you to teach in K-8 elementary school (64 credits) or as a math or science teacher in 5-12 secondary school (52 credits). As part of the curriculum, you select one Pathway 2 endorsement option from reading, middle school math, middle school science or middle school humanities.
Am I certified to teach after I finish the coursework?
After completing the courses, you will need a passing score on the Washington Educators Skills Test - Endorsements (West-E), followed by student teaching. Once your coursework, West-E and student teaching are successfully, you are recommended by Antioch for certification in Washington state. It is the state that provides you with your certification credential.
Can I work full time while in this program?
This depends on individual circumstances. Education classes are held during the evenings on weekdays to accommodate work schedules. Students must also complete several weeks of field experiences, however, that do require daytime commitments. Flexibility in your employment schedule makes this easier to manage.
Students are strongly discouraged from working during the student teaching internship at the end of their program.
Does Antioch have an online program?
Not at this time. Antioch does use online learning management systems to enhance its programs and offers a number of hybrid courses.
Do I need to take the WEST-B before I can apply?
Yes, you need to take and pass the test before you can apply.
