News ReleasesAug. 18, 2005Antioch Received $330,000 to create an Intergenerational Higher Education model in three schools serving Native AmericansSeattle – Antioch University Seattle received a $330,000 grant from Lumina Foundation for Education to implement an Intergenerational Higher Education (IHE) model in three Early College High Schools. The IHE model will enable Native American adults to take classes alongside secondary students in these ECHSs, which are secondary schools that provide postsecondary dual credit courses for their students. Each of the schools implementing the Intergenerational Higher Education model predominately serves Native American high school students, and will continue to do so. Stakeholders in these programs include adults from local tribal communities, high school students, representatives from higher education institutions, and school personnel. With the Foundation’s funds, these participating schools will develop the structure, capacity, and process to allow the adults to take college courses on the campus of a secondary school. Along with providing the financial support needed to catalyze this new model, Antioch will provide technical assistance in the form of school planning, policy research, and community engagement. Antioch will ensure the process and outcomes are documented so others can replicate this model. This grant will also enable Northwest Indian College to write eight syllabi for college courses that address Native American perspectives. NWIC will also provide two trainings for the faculty of the three ECHSs in culturally appropriate pedagogy.
