Conference Highlights Importance of Telling Stories
in the K-12 Classroom
WHAT: “Telling Stories: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking in the K-12 Classroom,” presented by the Washington State Council of Teachers of English and hosted by Antioch University Seattle
Topics for this interactive conference will include:

WHEN: From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 23, 2004, with registration at 8:30 a.m.
WHERE: The Antioch campus at 2326 Sixth Ave. in Belltown
WHO: Invited speakers include:
Roger Fernandes, a Native American artist whose work focuses on the culture and arts of the Puget Salish tribes of the Western Washington region. A storyteller since 1995, he was a speaker for the Washington Commission for the Humanities and created a special performance titled “Teaching of the First People,” which has the audience consider the teaching aspect of story.
Paula Coomer, a faculty member in the Creative Writing Department at Washington State University who has published poems and short stories in several books and magazines. She is completing her memoir as a health director on the Nez Perce and Coeur d’Alene reservations.
George Shanahan, a popular author of children’s books, including “Tomorrow’s Alphabet,” “Dance Away,” “Wise Acres” and “Stories to Solve: Folktale Around the World.” He has led many writing and reading workshops for teachers and students across the country.
COST: Non-members $40, members $30, students $20. Cost includes lunch. Credit hours are available.
