AUS Students, Faculty and Staff Share a Commitment to Making the World a Better Place

There a many examples of community projects and partnerships in which AUS students, faculty and staff are making a big difference in the lives of others. Here are just a few:

First Place Partnership Benefits Homeless Families

A shared commitment to making a difference in the education and lives of homeless families has brought together Seattle's First Place and AUS. The new partnership joins AUS psychology students with First Place, a nonprofit service agency that provides quality education and social services to children and families who are homeless.

Students are serving in a variety of clinical, advocacy and research roles that strengthen services provided to children suffering the effects of homelessness. Read more.

AUS Integrates Sustainability Across the Curriculum

In 2008, AUS became a signatory of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). In spring 2010, AUS entered its first national Recyclemania Competition. From 9,112 lbs. of trash produced on campus, we recycled 3,904 lbs. and composted 1,176 lbs.

Master's degrees in the Center for Creative Change, the B.A. concentration in Sustainable Business, the Environmental and Sustainability Education endorsement in the School of Education and the Ecopsycholgy concentration in the School of Applied Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy all represent a commitment to integrating sustainability across the curriculum. Women's Education Project Serves Homeless Women

Started by volunteer students, staff and faculty in 1998 in response to a request from the Women's Housing Equality & Enhancement League (WHEEL), an advocacy group for homeless women, the project offers a way for the University to act on its mission of social justice and commitment to community collaboration. WHEEL and The Sisters Project, a nonprofit that serves homeless women, worked with Antioch to design the program and make it a long-term success.
